Term Papers, Espresso Update, and a Job Interview

Well, it’s been an interesting week. The crush of catching up on those few homework assignments that never quite got done, term projects due next week, and thinking about final exams. At least it will be all done in another week or ten days. For this semester anyway.

The espresso trials have been somewhat disappointing. I am astonished at how difficult it is to be successful at this seemingly simple task. There is a remarkable variation in the quality of the espresso shots from very minor adjustments in the grind of the beans to how much you compact the coffee (tamp). The temperature of the water and preheating the portafilter also seem to play into it. Then to top it off the beans themselves add another variable into the mix.

Even if I had been successful at pulling a good espresso shot there is still another art to master… steaming the milk. Which does not, I have discovered, mean boiling the milk with steam. The trick (according to those in the know) is to surf the tip of the steam wand just below the surface of the milk thus creating a splendid micro-foam. Sounds easier than it is. Mostly I have managed to simply make hot milk with some silly-looking dishwater bubbles on top. Last night I actually turned out a halfway decent latte. I think I may have finally caught on to the surfing trick.

Now if I can just figure out the right combination of grinder settings, tamping pressure, etc. I might be able to whip out a decent espresso drink on-demand. Hope blooms eternal!

I also had another job interview this week. A friend of mine called me up and said his company was putting out a “call for resumes”. I sent him my resume which he forwarded on. Rather surprisingly I got a call later that morning and found myself sitting in an interview at 4pm that same afternoon. First time I’ve had anything move that fast since I’ve been here.

The interview went well. They are interested in me and I am interested in them. It’s a smaller company (as far as defense contractors go) but I really liked what I saw. They are working on some interesting projects with the US Army component (ARSTRAT) to US Strategic Command, Air Force Space Command, and also with US Northern Command. I enjoyed the people I met and it looks like a good opportunity. The company is Decisive Analytics Corp. I would be working in the Strategic and Operational Solutions Division. I should know sometime next week how this will all work out.

Espresso Trials

The espresso thing has not been without it’s challenges. Nevertheless, I am winning. The first machine to arrive was the Estro Vapore. It came from a “technical” company in California. They told me it was working but I think they meant to say “it was working when we put in the storage cabinet a few years ago”. I had to disassemble quite a bit of it and give it a thorough cleaning but that is somewhat expected when buying a used kitchen appliance.

It did not come with any instructions but I was able to figure out how to make it go. So far I have made a half dozen shots of espresso and steamed some milk too. I would rate the espresso shots around a 3 or 4 out of 10, ie. pretty nasty. I decided I had better go up to the local coffee shop and have them pull me a shot off their machine so I had some idea of what I am striving for. I definitely have a ways to go!

The second machine, a Gaggia Coffee, got delayed in shipping and just arrived yesterday. It is actually the better of the two (theoretically). It too was pretty grungy. I cleaned it up then tried to run some water through it. I got about a half a cup of water pumped through it and the pump quit! Arrghghhh! Whats up with this? The pump runs but nothing comes out.

Back to the Internet and research on the coffeegeek forums. Hmmm…. it seems that some people have successfully taken their pump apart, cleaned it, and restored it to operational condition. So, today I did that too and it worked! Whoohooo! In fact it is pumping all kinds of “yuck” out of the brew head. I had to take the shower head out and let it pour straight out. To help it along I ran some lemon juice through it and then went up to the local Starbucks and bummed a cleaning tablet from them. I think I now have most all the gunk out of it and will soon try a shot.

We Are So Truly Thankful!

This has been a year of great challenge but also great bounty and blessing! Most of all though it has been an opportunity to see God’s undeniable, ever present faithfulness! We are thankful for so many things that a list seems inadequate and sure to miss some important people or aspects of our lives. Many of you are often brought to mind and lifted before the Father for your needs at that moment or time as well as His provision for your life.

We are thankful for you!!!. Continue reading

Yeah! It Is Snowing Again!

I wish Kristina was here (she is still in IA at the Johnson/Elson wedding) as she always gets excited with me as it snows! It snowed overnight a little but today brought periods of steady light snow and it was so pretty. Fairly big, fluffy flakes! It turned the landscape into a picture postcard and makes me think of friends, family, and of Christmas. Yes, as much as I love Colorado, I miss YOU all at times like this!

Abby and I went for a walk in Ute Valley Park late this afternoon. Abby loves mountaineering! She races from rock to rock, dodging back and forth across the trail -ears flopping all the while. She never gets exhausted. No matter how far we hike, she never tires! She is constantly sniffing with that hound nose of hers; no scent along the way misses her notice. She had fresh deer scent to follow tonight and she would sometimes get out of my sight as she ran trying to find them. They were gone, however. Probably somewhere warm and cozy out of the storm, no doubt. Continue reading

The Wonder and Beauty of Each Day!

Today, two of my dear friends are giving their children in marriage to one another! I am so excited for them all! This is truly a day that two families “the Johnsons and the Elsons” are being blended together for a fabulous work and testimony to the Lord of Hosts. I know there has to be a mixture of emotions but as I have watched both families, the overwhelming one has to be the awe of God and His Plan. Who would have thought four or five years ago that these two friends that have grown up together with my kiddos would find a wonderous love for each other through their walk with the Lord. He is so awesome!
Kristina was able to go and take part in the festivities! We are excited to have her back home again soon so we can hear and see all the smiling faces, love shown toward one another, Glory given to the Lord, and details of the event. Mary promised pictures and maybe even video! That will not be like being there as we had planned but will be the next best thing.
We love you all and have thought of you often today and lifted all the details to our Father for His blessing. What an awesome event and day! Congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Johnson!

May God in His infinite wisdom, grant you a life full of His love poured through each other, forgiveness for even the small things as they can be big stumbling blocks, blindness to the faults of one another, mercy, grace, and strength to do as Jesus -say what His Father said and did – honoring Him and each other. It will be a joy to watch you grow together as you grow in Him. We love you!

Roasted Beans

In order to make espresso you need coffee beans. According to the experts these should be as freshly roasted as possible. Some folks even go so far as roasting their own. I’m not quite that enamored yet. I let my fingers do the walking in the yellow pages and lo and behold… we have 5 local roasters! Awesome… I love this city.

Ronda and I went over to a new City park today and hiked around some of the trails. City parks have different connotation here than they did back in Iowa. Actually, they call this an Open Space rather than a park. It’s nearly 800 acres and is similar to the Garden of The Gods area with the distinctive red rock formations. Aside from the trails they also have some brand new technical climbing areas which will undoubtably interest some people I know. It’s called Red Rock Canyon Open Space and was purchased by the city to preserve the area and keep it from being developed commercially.

So anyway… back to the storyline. My research indicated that one of these roasting places would be convienently located for a quick stop on the way home. High Rise Coffee Roasters is in downtown Old Colorado City just off the main drag. We stopped in and chatted with the owners for a bit and walked out with some freshly roasted espresso beans and a half pound of Guatemalan beans. Ronda brought home some of her Roobois tea that she likes.

Really nice folks there (thanks to Andrew for the free espresso machine cleaning tool) I’ll be happy to give them my business. Their website is a little lame though. Maybe I’ll try and help them out a little.

Espresso and Gutters

What you may ask do espresso and gutters have in common? Nothing really, but they both occupied my thoughts some today. I borrowed a ladder from Jerry (my neighbor) and cleaned the leaves out of the gutters today. One of those evil but necessary tasks. It wasn’t too bad actually. There were surprisingly few leaves and it was a breeze compared to the ol’ farmstead with it’s 2-story roofline.

I also raked up the remaining leaves and bagged them up. Kudo’s for Colorado Springs… no “special” bags required! Just put’em in regular trash bags and leave them for the garbage man. I have been pleased with the local attitude towards such things. Recyling is “optional”. I put the crumpled up bumper from Kristina’s Jeep out and they took it. Definitely my kind of garbage service.

Espresso… Ahh! I have always enjoyed coffee. It is my only real vice these days. I bought an inexpensive Krups unit many years ago and was vastly disappointed. It was basically useless and was quickly relegated to the basement. My interest waned for a number of years but I have gotten the bug again and decided to give it another try.

I have done my research and plan to master the art this time around. What I quickly discovered was a true espresso machine can be mighty pricey. But, one thing I have learned over the years is you are better off buying something of higher quality to start with. It will last longer, do the intended task better, and save you a lot of frustration (see comment above about Krups). I conducted the majority of my research at WholeLatteLove and CoffeeGeek.

As I am wont to do I turned to Ebay for a good second-hand machine. It took a week or so of looking and being patient but I found a couple of good deals and actually ended up buying two machines. One of them is coming with a very nice burr grinder which is essential (so I am told). I plan to put them both through their paces and keep the one I like the best. Now I just have to clean up one of my guns that is now collecting dust in the closet and sell it so I can pay for these new toys. So stay tuned for further adventures.
